BRE 700: Lecture Series – LNG Value Chain
This lecture series covers the complete process journey from raw natural gas to liquefied product demonstrated through live ProMax® models, including sweetening, dehydration, heavy hydrocarbon removal, and liquefaction. We will also discuss the underlying technology landscape and global LNG market context. Access to ProMax is not needed for this session, which will take approximately 2 hours. The lecture series is hosted over WebEx, and information on how to connect to the session will be provided after registration. Agenda
- Global LNG Landscape – overview of worldwide LNG consumption and trade flows, major exporting/importing regions, how feed gas composition varies by basin (lean vs. rich gas, CO₂/H₂S content, nitrogen levels), and how this drives downstream process selection.
- Liquefaction Technology Overview – comparison of commercially available liquefaction processes: C3MR, AP-X®, DMR (dual mixed refrigerant), cascade, single mixed refrigerant (SMR/ PRICO®), and nitrogen expander cycles — efficiency, footprint, and feedstock suitability trade-offs.
- Acid Gas Removal (Amine Sweetening) – discussion of CO₂/H₂S removal requirements ahead of liquefaction, amine selection, and how ProMax models absorber/stripper performance and energy requirements.
- Dehydration – why LNG requires molecular sieve dehydration rather than glycol alone, regeneration gas considerations, and setting up TEG and mol sieve systems in ProMax.
- Mercury and Heavy Hydrocarbon Removal – protecting aluminum heat exchangers from mercury and using scrub columns/NGL removal to prevent freezing and control heating value by pulling out benzene, heavier aromatics, and higher hydrocarbons before the cold box.
- Refrigeration Cycle Modeling – building and rating a mixed-refrigerant liquefaction loop in ProMax: compressor staging, refrigerant composition optimization, and multi-sided heat exchanger (cold box) performance.
- NGL Fractionation & Product Recovery – recovering and fractionating condensate/NGLs removed upstream, and how they integrate into the overall plant value chain and economics.
- Full Value Chain Case Study – live walkthrough of an integrated ProMax model connecting sweetening, dehydration, heavies removal, and liquefaction.
