Heat Exchanger Rating

  • Calculate complete exchanger details.
  • Choose from over 30 heat transfer fluids.
  • Generate TEMA datasheets.
  • Rate as well as size: shell and tube, fin fan and compact exchangers.
  • Determine the effect of fouling

Essentially all process industries use heat transfer equipment. Heat exchangers change the process stream conditions to optimize unit operations such as distillation and reaction. Exchangers also cool final products for safe transport and storage. Since heat exchangers are the most common unit in a majority of process plants, accurate exchanger rating or sizing is critical to plant evaluation and profitability.

The Heat Exchanger Rating package included in ProMax can help engineers improve existing plants or design new processes. Simulation results and user-supplied information are incorporated into design calculations for analyzing a variety of heat exchangers. Preliminary design estimates are currently available for four basic types of heat Exchangers: Double Pipe, Shell and Tube, Fin Fan, and Compact.

  • Exchanger Rating is available for Cross Exchangers and for Single Sided Exchangers, Separators, or Kettle Reboilers linked to another Exchanger, Separator, or Distillation Column. Multi-Sided (Compact) Exchangers can also be rated.
  • To perform exchanger rating for a Fin Fan or air cooler, for example, you can add another Single Sided Exchanger with air as the process stream and link the two exchangers via an energy stream. You can also model the Fin Fan or air cooler as a Cross Exchanger with air as one of the process streams.
  • The exchanger rating calculation compares the area for the specified heat exchanger configuration to the area required for heat transfer between the process streams and reports the percentage over/under design. The specified configuration is viable if the available area exceeds the required area and the pressure drops for all streams are within allowable limits. If either of these conditions is not met, the configuration will not work. The program does not change your input parameters in a rating calculation.
  • If Exchanger Rating is enabled, the TEMA datasheet will be included in the ProMax report provided the exchanger is included in the report and the report is created in Microsoft Word format.
  • Exchanger Sizing and In-Line Rating may be performed using a Solver. For a sizing application, the Solver can achieve the desired Percent Over Design by manipulating some variable such as Tube Length, Shell Inside Diameter, or Number of Tubes in Tube Bundle. For In-Line Rating applications, the Solver can achieve the desired Percent Over Design for a fixed exchanger geometry by manipulating some process variable such as outlet temperature or duty.
  • You can export exchanger rating parameters for use in the same project or in another ProMax project.
